Congratulations to our patient Michael Missel for being honored as #HerooftheGame by the Los Angeles @Rams during their first #NFLplayoffs game in LA since 1986. What an amazing night celebrating our wounded warriors! #HonoredtoServeU #UCLAOperationMend @wwp

“It’s not restoring the vanity, but the humanity, that some of us sacrificed for our country,” says Aaron Mankin, who served as a corporal in the Marines. “I was the very first patient to start getting surgeries through the UCLA Operation Mend program. Ten years ago, when I had no nose, no ears, and what was left of my mouth, I would never have believed that not only would UCLA Operation Mend restore all of it, but that I would be celebrating with 600 people telling me how good-looking I am. It’s overwhelming, and I’m so blessed. It’s amazing to be here.” #UCLAOperationMend #HonoredtoServeU #warriorcarenetwork @wwp

“I don’t think I would’ve been comfortable with myself, being out in the world, without UCLA Operation Mend,” says Robert Bruce, a chief petty officer in the Navy who was injured in a boiler accident. “The majority of the work in the beginning was facial reconstruction, and now it’s all about getting my hands more functional. It’s made my life so much better. It was really hard for me to wrap my head around the circumstances of that day, and the two men who passed away. UCLA Operation Mend helped me realize that I can try to do something good with my life and I’m so grateful for everything that it does, every day.” #UCLAOperationMend #HonoredtoServeU #warriorcarenetwork @wwp

“I burned 56 percent of my body when a boiler exploded,” says Michael Lammey, a Navy veteran who came to UCLA Operation Mend in 2009. “I had burned both sides of my hands, and I couldn’t lift or turn my head from the scar tissue. Scar tissue contracts and contracts, so I had very little range of movement. Now I can hold my head up straight and I have more flexibility and mobility in my hands. It makes you feel like a man again. I have three daughters and a wife, and when you can start doing the stuff you used to do, it lets you get back into that role as a husband and as a father. I feel free from the constraints of the scar tissue. It’s amazing." #UCLAOperationMend #HonoredtoServeU #warriorcarenetwork @wwp

“In 2005 my convoy rolled over an improvised explosive device and I suffered third-degree burns to 70 percent of my face and throughout my body,” says Octavio Sanchez, a retired Marine staff sergeant. “In 2008, I linked up with UCLA Operation Mend and Dr. Timothy Miller performed all the surgeries and he reconstructed my nose. The cool thing about it is that Dr. Miller was a former captain in the Army and he was a field surgeon and it just so happened he was chief plastic surgeon at UCLA Health at the time. He’s said he would come out of retirement if ever we needed any procedure done. It speaks volumes of Operation Mend and the people who are part of that program. Words can’t describe what they’ve done for me and my family." #UCLAOperationMend #HonoredtoServeU #warriorcarenetwork @wwp

“We’re all here, together, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of UCLA Operation Mend,” says Carol Lemus, a program manager for UCLA Operation Mend, which provides advanced surgical and medical treatment for post-9/11-era service members and veterans injured during combat operations or while training for service, as well as comprehensive psychological health care and social support for both wounded warriors and their family members. The anniversary party featured a performance by Billy Idol and celebrated the growth of the program. “We started in 2007 with only a couple of patients, and now we’re up to almost 300. We cover all of the flight, hotel, transportation and medical costs for the veterans. They don't pay for anything. Today is really a celebration about sharing the love and honoring the UCLA Operation Mend program.” #UCLAOperationMend #OpMend10 #HonoredtoServeU

“I don’t think there’s any other organization in the country that really does what UCLA Operation Mend does,” says Jabari White, a retired Army Captain who heard about the program through a friend. “I had hand surgery to extend my hand of motion. You get used to a limited range of motion, but Operation Mend really can do something to make your life better. I can’t say enough about the support I received. It’s also been therapeutic to be around other service members who have been wounded. It’s a body and soul kind of support.” #UCLAOperationMend #HonoredtoServeU #ItBeginswithU
